LD's Guide to Japan

Tokyo's cat cafes

Jane, the writer of the wonderful fashion blog Sea of Shoes, is spending some time in Tokyo and took some pictures in a “cat cafe.”  Go and check it out if you’ve never heard of them before.  There is, actually, one cat cafe in our prefecture, and I’ve sorta been wanting to go just to see what it’s like, but it’s kind of far from where I live (about 40 minutes by train).  Maybe I’ll get around to it one of these days…

Japanese writer(/director/singer) Hitonari Tsuji is writing a novel on Twitter about Twitter

Before I started to read it, I assumed it would be like the Japanese novels that have been written for and released on cell phones—more or less the same old structure on a different platform—and I thought to myself “a novel released in 140-character installments? UNNECESSARY! INDULGENT!”  But after reading through a little bit of it, it’s actually kinda clever and meta and even funny at times.  He’s even created multiple fake twitter accounts for it and it’s quite interesting how he weaves the story through time and (internet) space.  It makes me wonder why with blogs being so incredibly popular we haven’t seen more of this kind of 4-dimensional narrative (or maybe we have and I’m just not aware of it?).

It is, however, written in Japanese, so file this one under “this is only interesting if you know Japanese.”

60日後

60 Days Later is a tumblr by two Canadian illustrators who are spending 60 days in Japan.  They take some really wonderful photographs (mainly of Tokyo).  They’re almost halfway through their 60 days now, so hurry and go catch up on their blog!

Since I moved to Kurobe half a year ago, my blog has seen a big shift in terms of content.  While I was living in Los Angeles I was posting mainly about movies and tv, and just a little about myself.  In the past 6 months, however, I’ve posted almost exclusively about Japanese culture, and about my life and my work here.  To reflect this change, I’ve decided to give my blog a big redesign to better represent its new content.  The background photo is one I took this past fall at Kinkakuji (the Temple of the Golden Pavilion) in Kyoto.  Please let me know if you encounter any problems on the new site so I can try to fix them.

My girlfriend just turned me on to this Japanese web series called “The World of GOLDEN EGGS”, which is basically a whole bunch of nonsense, but I’ve been laughing my ass off watching it.  It’s a series of short ad-libbed sketches that 2 guys recorded with a microphone and then made animations to go with it.  It is subtitled in English, although I can imagine that having some knowledge of Japanese would make it funnier, but you should give it a try even if you don’t know the language.
