NYT: Steve Martin Play Stirs School Controversy

zachlinder:

Steve Martin offered to pay for a group to perform his play, “Picasso at the Lapin Agile,” because it was banned by the school board of Newport Beach, CA.  Parents ridiculously protested, and rehearsals were immediately stopped when the board received a petition signed by 137 people.  If you’ve never seen the play, about a meeting between Albert Einstein and Pablo Picasso at a bar in Paris, it’s really hilarious.

We did this play at my high school

Art, by Yasmina Reza, is one of my favorite plays that I’ve seen.

3 friends have a falling out that starts when one of them wastes spends a huge sum of money on a white painting.

Excellent night out at UCB Theatre

Right off the bat, I met Amy Poehler.  Okay, I didn’t really meet her, but we were walking past each other and I said “Hi” and she said “Hi” back, so I’m counting it.

Met up with Kristina.

Had some excellent Japanese food (shrimp and vegetable tempura) at the restaurant right next to the theatre.

Laughed my butt off at Jimmy Pardo’s “You Bet Your Life,” guest starring Oscar Nuñez (of The Office).

Had a giant cup of chai at a weeeeiiiiiird coffee house on the corner.

Met up with several more tumblr people and we laughed our asses off BIG TIME at UCB’s Midnight Show.

Musical guest Don’t Stop or We’ll Die was amazing.

Highlights:

“There’s nothing insane about a cat orgy”

“I’m Amelia Earhart”

“Steak, motherfuckers!”

Will Ferrell Opens On Broadway

I wonder how much the show has changed since I saw a stage reading of it in December

Also, I didn’t know they were going to air it on HBO.  That’s pretty awesome.
