Eighty percent of the human body is made of water, so it isn’t surprising that one sees a different face in the mirror each morning. The skin of the forehead and cheeks changes shape from movement to movement like the mud of a swamp, shifting with the movements of the water below and the footsteps of the people walking above it.
–Yoko Tawada, The Bath (via youarebonbon and unicornology)
In college I read some of her works in my Japanese lit class, and then I was lucky enough to meet her when she came to do a reading on our campus. It was absolutely enthralling. She wove stories seamlessly through English and Japanese and German; she used the space of the room in her poetry, moving around the room as she recited lines; she showed pictures as she was reading and then threw them in various directions. She’s a fascinating writer, and definitely worth reading.
