Just got home from Judd Apotow’s “An Evening With Funny People”
They requested at the start of the show that we “please don’t go home and review the show on the internet like an asshole,” so I’m not gonna say much.
The whole show was being filmed for Judd’s newest movie, Funny People, due out in July, and the stars, Aziz Ansari, Adam Sandler, and Seth Rogen, performed standup in character as who they’re playing in the film.
Also performing—but not for the movie, they were just appearing as themselves—were David Spade, Sarah Silverman, and Patton Oswalt.
First of all, the show was 3-and-a-half hours long! It was intense. And I had to pee the entire time, but it was so good I didn’t want to leave. Honestly, everyone was effing hilarious.
Talking to people on the way out, however, it was clear that Aziz was the crowd favorite, and deservedly so. Without getting into too much detail, he plays a comedian named Raaaaaaaandy (whom Aziz has set up a myspace page for) who is kind of a rock star and is backed up by a dj named Ol’ Young’un. I’d seen Aziz perform a few of the jokes before, but in his Raaaaaaaandy persona they seemed completely fresh. The two of them brought down the house more than once.
I gotta say, because Aziz is a fellow tumblr user, I feel a certain pride in his outstanding performance tonight. If that performance is reflected even half as well in the final product of the movie, than this could be a huge boost in his notoriety.
