Currently Reading: ダーリンは外国人, or “My Darling is a Foreigner.” It’s an autobiographical manga (comic) series by a Japanese woman from Gifu about her relationship with her American, half-Hungarian, scruffy-bearded, Japanese-fluent husband. It’s an amusing look at their everyday life and the clashes that they experience with each other and the world around them—both culturally-based and personality-based. Needless to say, as an American, half-Hungarian, slightly-scruffy-bearded, nearly-Japanese-fluent man dating a Japanese girl from Toyama (one of Gifu’s bordering prefectures), it really hits home with me.
ダーリンは外国人was just made into a movie this year starring my favorite Japanese actress, Mao Inoue, and features a theme song by one of my favorite J-pop singers, aiko. If only they’d gotten ME to play the husband’s role… sigh…
